Paraneoplastic Syndromes of the Nervous System

Paraneoplastic syndromes of the nervous systems are a rare group of disorders that develop in some cancer patients impairing memory, thinking ability, sleep, muscle movement and coordination. These disorders typically occur before cancer is diagnosed. The body’s immune system cancer fighting cells begin to also attack the brain, muscles, peripheral nerves and spinal cord. Lung, breast, blood and ovarian cancers are most commonly associated with paraneoplastic syndromes of the nervous system.
