NF1, NF2 and Other Tumor Types

NF1, or neurofibromatosis type 1, is a genetic disorder that produces multiple types of tumors that may impact nerves in the body, brain and spinal cord. Symptoms of NF1 typically appear during childhood. The disorder is progressive and symptoms worsen during periods of high hormonal activity such as puberty and pregnancy. As tumors surround and penetrate the nerves, patients may experience pain, disfigurement, and orthopedic difficulties. Some may develop tumors on the nerves of the eye.

NF2, or neurofibromatosis type 2, is a rare genetic disorder that produces tumors on the nerves for balance and hearing leading to the inner ear. In addition, patients with NF2 are at increased risk for developing other tumors of the nervous system. While these tumors generally are benign, they may cause significant problems if multiple tumors form in or near the brain and the condition itself is lifelong.
