Most instances of mucosal melanoma are detected at an advanced stage because the cancer isn’t linked to excessive sun exposure.
Mucosal melanoma can occur in body areas that are not easily inspected, making detection even more difficult. During treatment, we may remove the cancer, some surrounding skin and possibly nearby lymph nodes. If the tumor is small and hasn’t spread, surgery is the best option. We also may use radiation to destroy remaining cancer cells and chemotherapy if the cancer has spread or has returned after treatment.
